Kyabram Bush Verse Group's Les Parkinson will perform at Around the Campfire.

LES Parkinson knows how to keep people on the edge of their seats when he spins a yarn or recites a poem.

It’s no wonder, as he’s been a member of the Kyabram Bush Verse Group for longer than he can remember.

And next week, he’ll be among the elocutionary talent taking to the Kyabram Club stage.

Presented by Kyabram Lions Club and Kyabram Bush Verse Group, Around the Campfire returns once again this year for a night of bush verse and yarn-spinning.

Talent such as Mick Coventry, Greg McKenzie, Colin Milligan, Jim Carlisle and Les James are already on the cards.

And if you feel like taking your recitation nous out for a spin, there’s still plenty of time to sign up – with the club taking entries on the night.

The performer with the best poetry recital will be up for the Herb McCrum Poetry Award, with the best storyteller earning the John Johanson Yarn Spinning Award.

While most poems are allowed, Les said political pieces and bad language are not preferred.

The night will kick off with performances from the winners of the junior bush poetry competition, held the day before.

And it will continue with a series of recitals – from poems sure to keep you in stitches to yarns that will leave you with a tear in your eye.

“It’s a fantastic chance to see the talent we have here in Kyabram,” Les said.

The junior bush poetry competition will be held at 9am at the Kyabram Fauna Park on Wednesday, October 18.

All are welcome.

Around the Campfire runs from 7pm at the Kyabram Club on Thursday, October 19.

Entry is $15 for adults and $5 for children, including a light supper.

To book, call Les Parkinson on 5852 2281.
