Zander's triple treat

November 22, 2017

Merrigum Primary School's Zander Newham came second in the School Sport Victoria Hume region championships for triple jump.

HE may be only 10, but Zander Newham is already making leaps and bounds on the athletics scene.

The Merrigum Primary School student recently competed at the School Sport Victoria Hume region championships, scoring second place for triple jump with an 8.57-metre jump.

The unstoppable young athlete then progressed to the state level last Monday, achieving eighth place out of 16 kids.

‘‘I was nervous because I was up against the best triple jumpers my age in Victoria and I didn’t know how good they were,’’ he said.

‘‘But once I start I’m fine. I use the practice jumps to get used to how different people jump and to get used to what the track and pits are like.’’

Zander said his dad was an inspiration for him.

‘‘He drove me to the championships on Monday,’’ he said.

‘‘Dad used to be a really good triple jumper and taught me a lot of my technique.’’
