A CAPTAIN-INSPIRED Kyabram made a welcome return to the winning list with a thrilling Haisman Shield win over Old Students on the final day of their two-day Cricket Shepparton clash on Saturday at Kyabram.

Chasing Old Students’ 9/201 from the opening day of the game, Kyabram’s batsmen reached their target with six balls to spare against the bottom side as a result of some gritty batting efforts.

English import Elliott Callis, opening the innings, top scored with 67 with five fours and shared in valuable partnerships with Cade Mueller and skipper Alec Young.

In a return to form, Mueller made 36.

Young played another captain’s knock, making an unbeaten 60 with five boundaries, which followed up his four-wicket haul in Old Students’ innings.

Kyabram now sits in fourth place on the ladder going into the festive break.

It meets another potential finalist Mooroopna in a two-day game starting at Kyabram when the season resumes on January 6.

■IN B grade Kyabram’s 209 on the opening day proved a winner against Central Park St Brendans, who resumed at 2/29.

With Matt McDonald and Kanwal Singh stepping up with the ball, Kyabram captured the last eight wickets for 127 to restrict its rival to 156 off 64.1 overs.

McDonald was a matchwinner with his 5/43 off 16 overs and he was backed to the hilt by Singh, who captured 3/35 off 15 overs.

■KYABRAM D grade side just failed to pull off an outright win over Dhurringile.

Holding a 50-run lead after a first innings Dhurringile batting collapse, Kyabram found itself needing 219 runs to secure a maximum points win but came up 24 runs short.

Despite its first innings jitters, Dhurringile’s batsmen took control in its second innings to pile up 7/269. Kyabram’s batsmen who took up the challenge to try and chase down the big target were openers Nathan Pell (38) and Troy Thomson (54) and first drop Jason Leocata with 48.

Pell hit five fours and a six, Thomson 10 fours and Leocata four fours and two sixes in a bold but unsuccessful bid to steal the outright points.

■IN E grade Kyabram had a good win over Old Students to complete a good day for the club. No details have been supplied other than Kyabram made 8/172 and then bowled out Old Students for 151.
