A SELF-CONFESSED kleptomaniac who stole tools and books from shops in Echuca and Kyabram has been jailed for six days.

Ruby Jane Haabakoski, 22, appeared in custody at Echuca Magistrates’ Court pleading guilty to shoplifting, resisting arrest, committing an indictable offence on bail and failing to answer bail.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Rachael Hitchens said Haabakoski stole $30 worth of books and items from Kyabram Post Office on May 16 last year by hiding them in her jumper.

The former Kyabram woman also shoplifted several tools from Echuca Ag-Parts on July 6 last year.

When a witness confronted her, she fled along Mundarra Rd and dropped the tools at Northern Constructions.

When she was interviewed by Kyabram police several days after both offences, she told them she was a ‘‘kleptomaniac’’ and on the first occasion, ‘‘I may have had a Xanax that day.’’

With two outstanding warrants, Kyabram police went to arrest Haabakoski at her home on October 14 when Snr Constable Hitchens said she became ‘‘animated and started swearing loudly’’.

After failing to answer to bail, Haabakoski was arrested last week and spent six days in custody at Swan Hill remand centre and Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.

Mr Murphy convicted Haabakoski and sentenced her to six days imprisonment, with time served.
