Harvey Smith stands proudly with his award for best Shell service station in Tasmania and Victoria

KYABRAM is now officially home to the best Shell petrol station in all of Victoria and Tasmania, after store owners Harvey and Janette Smith were presented with the honour at a recent conference on the Gold Coast.

“I felt like a bit of a rockstar when everyone was congratulating us, it was just really unexpected,” Mr Smith said.

The award was based around a few different factors, including fuel volume, safety, and one other sneaky test.

“Supposedly, a mystery motorist came through,” Mr Smith said.

“That’s where Shell organises someone to come secretly through the store, acting as a normal customer but really they are testing our shop to see what it’s like.”

Obviously, whoever it was left quite impressed.

The Kyabram Shell store has made a knack of collecting awards lately after it won the ‘safety award’ this time last year.

‘‘I think that award put us on the map a little bit and led on to this major award.’’

The conference was just down the road for the Smiths, they’re based on the Sunshine Coast now but try to get down to Kyabram every month or so.

“It’s great to come down here and see how everyone is doing and what’s been happening, this time we were able to bring an award with us.”

“It’s the only store we own so we like to put a lot of time into it.”

Mr Smith was adamant most of the praise deserves to go to his staff.

“I really can’t take credit for it, we owe a lot of this to our staff — they keep it in check and in order and we can’t thank them enough for all their help.”

While the framed certificate now sits proudly at the counter, that’s not the only reward they get for their rescue effort.

“We now get to go to Dubai on May 8 to attend the world conference.”

“We get to do a bit of touring and stuff like that as well so it’s an amazing opportunity.”

A lot of time and effort has gone into moulding the store into award-winning quality, 38 years’ worth in fact.

“We have owned it since 1980 and can’t see us leaving any time soon.”
