JACKIE Bell is a special kind of hero.
She has been looking out for Kyabram children for more than 10 years now, helping them safely cross the road.
Jackie supervises the Fischer St crossing, outside of Kyabram P-12, and she said the 10 years had flown by.
“Yes it has gone quite quick, I remember when I first started here as a reliever, it was supposed to be for just six weeks, but I haven’t left since,” Jackie said.
It’s easy to see why the students love having Jackie there – morning and afternoon.
They greet her as they walk past, she knows each of them by name, and warns them to stay inside the white lines – politely.
“I think I have built a bit of a trusting relationship with the kids and parents who go past here, well I hope I have at least,’’ Jackie said.
“I do enjoy it, sometimes I don’t enjoy how people drive or how people cross the road but most of the time I enjoy getting to know the kids.”
Jackie celebrated turning 76 on March 29.
While she loves the job she also admitted she enjoys her time off, which is why she intends to spend her holidays relaxing.
