TONGALA remains undefeated in the Murray Netball League for 2018 with the team looking to again be a grand final contender.
The side left its run late to get the victory on Saturday and coach Jarrad Walker admits his team did not play consistently well throughout the game.
However, it still did enough for Tongala to take home a five goal win over Mulwala.
‘‘I honestly think we were pretty patchy,’’ Walker said.
‘‘There were a lot of moments in that game where we could have improved our play.’’
Walker said the team was still experimenting and trying to find its ideal line-up going forward.
He said he spent the match trialling different ways that could work throughout the season.
‘‘We tried a lot of different things to see what was the best way to get on top of Mulwala and those tactics really didn’t click until the last 10 minutes, so we weren’t able to get the rewards that we were looking for,’’ Walker said.
‘‘It’s one of those things we know we need to get on top of going forward — making sure that we can make these changes and get them working earlier in the game so that we aren’t leaving our charge until late in the game.’’
Walker said his team needed to be more relaxed when games were tight.
‘‘Our girls may not have been expecting the game to be as close as it ended up being, it’s hard to say,’’ Walker said.
‘‘I think in those situations we need to be a bit more clear in the mind — you don’t want them to get too tense through the pressure.
‘‘That said, I think it speaks to the quality of our girls that they continued to look for ways that we can get the results we want as a team this season. We want to keep winning and it says something that we kept trying to find ways to win the match.’’
Walker said his team’s late movement was a highlight.
‘‘We presented really well in the final ten minutes or so,’’ Walker said.
‘‘We set really good targets and we moved the ball around the court quickly. It’s what you really want in a tight game for your team to be at its absolute best when it gets to the tough stages of the game.’’
