Thank God for the Salvos

The Kyabram Scout Group are keen to help out for the Red Shield Appeal this weekend.

THE Kyabram Salvation Army is calling on locals to dig deep this weekend as they hold their annual Red Shield Appeal.

And they’re also looking for anyone who has time to spare to get involved and go from door to door collecting donations for what is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Captain Gail Roberts said the support from groups in the district has been outstanding but they’re always looking for more people.

“We can only do so much with the number of volunteers we get on the weekend,” she said.

“The fact that we have young people taking part in this is great, there are organisations around the district that are encouraging young people to get involved.

“We’re not talking about one or two either, these are big groups like the Kyabram Scouts and Christine Dicketts’ group in Stanhope.”

And when asked how many volunteers the Salvos were hoping to rally, Captain Roberts said they’re hoping to cover more of Kyabram.

“We need as many as possible, in the six years we’ve been here doing it we’ve only covered about a quarter of the town because people have to head out to other towns and go door to door,” she said.

“We have volunteers doing as many as they can, putting in long hours sometimes over several days just for the appeal.”

Donations will go toward Salvation Army programs and services to help keep them running.

The programs support everyone from parents struggling to pay the bills and feed families, those unable to work from illnesses and refugees who have fled war zones to find safety in Australia.

Captain Roberts said anyone can find themselves in a tough spot financially and that’s why this weekend is so important for the Salvation Army, so they can continue their work.

If anyone has time to volunteer for the Red Shield Appeal they can contact captains Gail and John Roberts on 5852 3875.
