FIVE local girls won gold at Greensborough on the weekend at the Junior Country Hockey Championships.
Lancaster’s Chloe Kell, and Tongala’s Keeley Thompson, Courtney Thompson and Hannah and Haylee Greenman were all part of the Goulburn Valley under 15 side that took out the title.
Day one saw the GV play three games. They defeated Albury Wodonga 2-0, were too good for East Gippsland 4-1 and got the better of North Central 2-0.
On Sunday they had another three games. Firstly they won after the siren by converting a penalty corner to defeat Glenelg 2-1.
The tight victory and their earlier dominance saw the girls book a spot in the grand final with two round games still to play.
The girls played Sunraysia and Central Victoria in their last two matches, winning 3-0 and 2-1 in the respective games.
Next was the finale against a Glenelg side they had struggled against earlier in the competition.
After 32 minutes of hockey the two teams couldn’t be split — the game was in the balance at 1-1 — so the match went to a penalty shootout.
Keeley, Courtney and Chloe all converted, and the GV goalkeeper made two quality saves to wrap up the win for GV and finish an undefeated campaign.
Lancaster’s Lucas Kell and Tongala’s Ethan Thompson also represented the GV in the under 13 boys competition.
Their team drew four matches and won two to finish in fifth position.
