A WYUNA learner driver who crashed a car and took off without reporting the accident has been fined $500.
Mitchell Brody Cootes-Neilson, 24, pleaded guilty in Echuca Magistrates Court to being a learner without an experienced driver, failing to report an accident and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Dave Rennie said Cootes-Neilson crashed a car into a farm gate on Bonny Rd, near the Scobie Rd intersection, in Kyabram about 1am on March 4, 2018.
When police arrived at 6.50am, they found the vehicle extensively damaged and farm gate destroyed. The owner of the car nominated Cootes-Neilson as the driver, who owned up to the offence.
‘‘He was remorseful for his actions and was uninjured. He did not attend hospital,’’ Snr Constable Rennie said.
‘‘He told police ‘I just wanted to get home. I was that close to home, I just walked’.’’
Magistrate John Murphy suspended his licence for three months, but did not record a conviction.
