Non-playing coach and club legend Corey Carver will be joined in a joint role with star player Tom Davies in what is a succession plan for Davies to eventually take the top position.
Davies had been appointed assistant coach to Carver for this year after playing several games with the club last year as a fly-in player from Darwin.
After finishing sixth last year and winning two finals, the Wombats, boosted by some prize recruits, were anticipating a big season before coronavirus struck.
Davies, 24, played juniors and had some senior experience with Lancaster before joining Goulburn Valley League club Shepparton Swans.
He spent four seasons in Darwin after that playing in the domestic competition, as well as two seasons in the representative Northern Territory Thunder side in the interstate North Eastern Australian Football League competition.
Last season he won the best and fairest award with the St Mary’s Football Club, which came runner-up in the Northern Territory Football League.
His versatility as a player will give the Wombats plenty of options next season.
Corey Carver, who was to lead the Wombats for a third term this season, said most of Lancaster’s recruits for this year will be on board again next year, and he is really looking forward to working with Davies.
‘‘We’ll have an off-field and on-field perspective on our games with Tom coming on board, and that should help,’’ said Carver, who won five club best and fairest awards and was twice runner-up in the league’s McNamara Medal in an illustrious 230-game playing career with the Wombats.
‘‘We may lose one or two players from this year’s list, but I’m confident most will be going around again.”
