KyFit is kicking off at the start of term three thanks to a partnership between Kyabram Police and MPWR24 Health and Fitness, funded through the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.
The program, which will initially run active sessions on a Thursday after school, aims to motivate high schoolers to get active and build connection with local mentors.
And the young people won’t be the only ones building up a sweat – members from Ky Police and possibly local ambulance and fire services are expected to join in throughout the program.
Constable Mitchell Bull said he was looking forward to getting young people connected to role models they can look up to.
“This program is all about building good mental, emotional and physical health,” he said.
“With a focus on fitness and a sense of belonging, we want to build self esteem and encourage confidence in a team environment so that they know they are a valuable team player.
“And while we will have adults there who can act as mentors, it’s also about the younger ones getting the opportunity to be good mentors to one another, too.”
In a town filled with team sports, the program will give teenagers a chance to give some less traditional sports a go.
The sessions will include boxing, fit challenges, nutrition, circuit and base station work. It will all be facilitated by fully qualified gym instructors and trainers.
MPWR24 gym owner Bryan Kennedy said it was a great opportunity to try a bunch of new things.
“It’s important to show young people in town that there are opportunities in Ky. We offer an inclusive environment. This program will decrease antisocial behaviour and make a great positive difference,” he said.
Depending on interest the program will initially start as a trial, with the opportunity to expand to different days and times to accommodate the young people wanting to participate.
It will kick off with an open day during the upcoming school holidays on Thursday July 11 from 4pm to 5.30pm. The open day is an opportunity for young people and parents or guardians to come in and sign up for the program.
