Discover what you can do in your own backyard

Moira Shire Council launched its Discovery Weekend at Cactus Country in Strathmerton on Friday.

The weekend — July 27 and 28 — encourages locals and tourists to visit hotspots across the region.

During the weekend, residents can enjoy local produce, paddle boat rides, coffee, historic tours and more, all for just $1.

Mayor Libro Mustica was looking forward to the weekend and encouraged all residents to save the date.

‘‘Locals are the friendly faces to thousands of family and friends visiting our region each and every year,’’ he said.

‘‘The Sun Country Discovery Weekend is a great opportunity to explore our own backyard, so we can spread the word to our friends and relatives when they visit.

‘‘Our farm gate trail, with more than 20 operators on board, as well as the silo art trail are becoming more popular than ever.

‘‘With the Discovery Weekend, from Bundalong to Barmah, tourism operators will welcome locals to re-visit attractions they may not have been to for a while or to take a tour they haven’t experienced before.’’

Cr Mustica said visiting friends and relatives made a significant contribution to the local tourism economy and accounted for 34.54 per cent of day visitors, 31.7 per cent of domestic overnight visitors and 42 per cent of international visitors to the region.

‘‘Residents will receive a ticket and brochure in the mail about the specials on offer over the Discovery Weekend,’’ he said.

‘‘Just show your Sun Country Discovery Weekend ticket at participating venues and enjoy mates rates all weekend.’’

Prizes are on offer for residents who collect four stickers on their ticket at participating venues.

The prizes, valued at $1500, include two nights’ accommodation at RACV Resort Cobram plus a three-hour sunset dinner cruise for four people aboard the MV Paradise and a Locheilan Cheese Triple Cream Brie Ring; a two-night accommodation voucher from The Sinatra Waterfront Holiday Homes, Mulwala; and a two-night cabin stay at the Numurkah Caravan Park.

People just need to return completed tickets with four stickers to a local Visitor Information Centre before Saturday, August 10 to be in the running.
