For Kyabram Fauna Park manager Lachlan Gordon, best friends come furry.
And now his dedication has been recognised with the Australasian Society of Zoo Keeping Conservationist of the Year Award.
He has been recognised by his peers as a game-changer in protecting some of Australia’s most vulnerable species.
‘‘I’m very humbled to receive this award from the Australasian Society of Zoo Keeping because it is recognition from my peers,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘Wildlife conservation is something I’m very passionate about and it’s a field where you chip away, day after day, not expecting awards or accolades.
‘‘During my career I’ve been actively involved in threatened, vulnerable and endangered species breeding programs as well as conservation-based research programs so it’s really nice to be recognised for something I’ve put my heart and soul into,’’ he said.
Before starting in Ky in March this year, he worked with animals at attractions including Oakvale Wildlife Park, Australia Zoo, Cairns Safari Park, Cairns Tropical Zoo and Paradise Country.
The Fauna Park is home to more than 600 native animals who live on 55 hectares of open woodlands, wetlands and lakes.
Kyabram Fauna Park committee of management chair Marg Allan congratulated Mr Gordon.
‘‘This award shows the respect Lachlan has attracted from his peers and recognises his hard work in wildlife conservation, something Kyabram Fauna Park has been renowned for in the past,’’ she said.
‘‘The committee was very pleased to attract someone of Lachlan’s calibre to the general manager role and, since he started in March, he has demonstrated his commitment to helping Kyabram Fauna Park flourish.
‘‘The committee of management is working with Lachlan and the Fauna Park team to develop a strategic plan that will guide the park into the future.
‘‘We’ll be sharing that plan with the community in the coming months and seeking feedback.
‘‘It’s great the park has someone with Mr Gordon’s experience and passion to lead the much-loved visitor attraction.’’
