TREVOR Bassett had no idea he was up for an Australia Day honour.
He missed the presentation in Kyabram because he was out of town and only found out when he read his name in the paper.
Trevor was named sportsperson of the year for his service to sport in Kyabram and district, having been involved with croquet since 1990 and squash since 2001.
“I’ve been on various committees. Too many to name, actually,” Trevor said.
“I’m proud to be recognised, especially when you consider how many deserving people there are in the community. Sport wouldn’t function around here without a small army of volunteers.
“I’m honoured to be recognised but I think it’s important to thank all the volunteers who keep our region’s sports clubs running.”
