Stanhope will join the ranks of rural communities in public art, with a new mural with a poignant historical connection.
The mural tells the story of the Montevideo Maru, a prisoner of war ship that was accidentally sunk by the allies in 1942.
The full story about what happened did not emerge until after the war.
The mural, by artist Tim Bowtell, was commissioned by the Stanhope sub branch of the RSL, with support of the Stanhope and District Development Committee, because three soldiers from the Stanhope area were lost on the ship.
The mural is in Glasgow St opposite the public park, which includes a war memorial.
RSL secretary George Gemmill said the plan was to have an interpretive board erected at the park, followed by an official opening.
He thanked the people of the Stanhope community for generously contributing towards the cost of the mural.
