Here I was thinking that last month was good fishing.

In the past month I have witnessed some truly awesome fishing with plenty of good sized fish caught and a few missed.
The size and quality of fish has been outstanding.
The biggest fish caught from the the past few weeks was caught by local fishing guru Rob Menadue.
Rob managed to wrestle an absolute beast of a cod measuring in at 110cm fishing from his kayak.
He followed it up last week with a 92cm cod.
Scott Burke also landed a couple of nice cod, his biggest nearing 110cm and the other at 94cm.
Scott’s 94cm cod was also a tagged cod. The story from this fish is that it was captured and tagged at the Wakool Reserve at 84cm.
It has then travelled up the Yallakool Creek through the fish ladder there into the Edward River through Stephen’s Weir fish ladder and caught deep in the Werai State Forest five years later measuring in at 94cm.
That’s pretty impressive I’d say.
Lure fishing in the Edward River at the moment is the best it’s been in years with most who have ventured out coming back in with good results.
Glenn Higgins managed to troll up a couple of healthy cod measuring in at 83cm and 71cm downstream from Conallin’s beach.
Cody Learmonth caught a solid 82cm cod on a surface lure downstream from Benarca Bend and in the same area Matt Maher landed a cracking 81cm cod on a swimbait.
Ray Reid trolled up a small cod of 54cm on a Lads Boofhead lure, which are soon to be stocked at Betta Camping and Outdoors.
Pat Westcott reeled in a nice 81cm casting a Jackall Doozer into some deep water, and I was also lucky enough to get a good 80cm casting around the same area.
There’s been plenty of action around the Four Post area as well, with Dr John Conallin and his fishing mate Ian Fisher casting up some sizeable cod.
The pair caught six cod fishing from their kayaks, the biggest measuring 95cm caught of the surface.
I also managed an 80cm plus cod casting a Bunji surface lure from the bank while waiting for Pat to return from a kayaking trip.
Tic O’Toole showed his dad Peter how it was done landing a couple of healthy cod under the powerlines.
Tic trolled up an 81cm cod then followed it up the next week catching a 70cm cod, both on a black AC Invader lure.
Bridie Howe was also lucky enough to troll up a nice 72cm cod.
Keen young angler Jake Herberte also got in on the action landing a nice 61cm cod casting a black and red Spinnerbait.
Michael Todd managed to fool a couple of small cod into taking his Jackall Gantral lure. These lures are becoming very popular at the moment and are having some great results.
The Wakool River is still producing plenty of fish, with Tim Rose catching nearly every fish in the creek.
Tim has had good results casting hardbodied and surface lures. The best times have been late afternoon to sunset.
New to surface lure fishing was Brock ‘Boots’ Hunt. Brock somehow fooled a couple of small cod to take his surface lure.
Terry Lumbar and his wife Simone managed a rare feat getting a double hook up, the pair hooking up at the same time both using surface lures in the Wakool. Great effort team Lumbar.
Moving out to the Billabong, Alex Doidge was lucky enough to land a couple of healthy cod, one 53cm on a bardie moth and the other a 79cm casting a Jackall Pompadour surface lure.
Kaiden Joss tried his luck in the Mulwala Channel and caught a solid redfin casting a spinnerbait close to one of the regulators that are along the channel.
For those using spinnerbaits, I’ve found that casting hard up against a fallen tree or an old log is best.
Let your spinnerbait sink to the bottom and slowly retrieve it back adding a couple of pauses in between to let it drop back down into the zone.
Hopefully the river will stay nice and clear and we don’t get too much of the dirty water coming down the Murray.
If the river stays clear and at the same height the next month should also see some good results.
