The CESL board has approved the amalgamation of St Francis Primary School and St Mary of the Angels Secondary College.
The new structure will bring both communities together under a single identity called St Mary of the Angels College F-12, operating across two campuses.
Foundation to Year 6 will be at the St Francis Primary Campus and Years 7 to 12 at St Mary of the Angels Secondary Campus.
Catholic Education Sandhurst executive director Kate Fogarty said the decision reflected a confident investment in the future of Catholic education in Nathalia.
“This is a moment of great optimism for the Nathalia community,” she said.
“By bringing these two strong school communities together, we are strengthening the foundations of Catholic education locally and ensuring it continues to flourish for generations to come.”
The new model builds on the already strong relationship between the two schools, while preserving the distinct history and identity of each site through campus naming.
Executive principal Bev Thorpe welcomed the announcement as an exciting chapter for students, staff and families.
“We already share a deep sense of community, and this new structure allows us to build on that strength,” she said.
“Our students will benefit from a seamless educational journey, supported by a dedicated and collaborative staff team.
“Most importantly, we will continue to nurture a strong sense of belonging for every student, from their earliest years through to graduation.”
The amalgamation honours the rich legacy of Catholic education in Nathalia, including the contribution of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood, who established Catholic education in the township in 1961.
It also honours the generations of lay educators who have shaped its success over more than six decades.
This next chapter will preserve the traditions that have guided the community while embracing new opportunities for growth and excellence in Catholic education.
