Mr Fawns, who was elected to MIL in June 2018 and was made chairman in November last year, stood down Monday this week.
Specific reasons for the change have not been made public by the company, and the Southern Riverina News has been advised the board will not be making further comment on the matter.
Mr Fawns was not available for comment before going to print yesterday.
In a statement issued to shareholders this week, MIL said while Mr Fawns will no longer be chairman he will remain on the board.
“In the interim, Noel Baxter will be acting chair,” the statement said.
“Steve will continue to support both the incoming chair and CEO when appointed by the board, to ensure the best outcomes for the company.
“The board thanks Steve for his contribution and efforts over the past few months while in the acting CEO and executive director role.
“In relation to MIL management, general manager operations Scott Barlow and general manager engagement, policy and compliance Gabrielle Cusack will report directly to the board in a temporary capacity, as the company continues the recruitment process for a new CEO.”
