Another big innings from Paul Newman on the first day of Kyabram’s Cricket Shepparton’s Haisman Shield clash with Central Park-St Brendans has left the result in the balance.
Newman’s fighting 85, which followed a century in the previous game against Tatura, enabled Kyabram to post 203 off 79.2 overs.
In contrast to his normal free-hitting game, Newman occupied the batting crease for 214 minutes and faced 160 balls in steadying the Kyabram innings.
Newman got most support from opener Paul Parsons with 27 Jackson McLay (16), Alex Young (16) and Charlie McLay (18 not out).
In an herculean effort with the ball, the combine’s opening bowler Ramadan Yze bowled unchanged throughout the Kyabram innings with his 40 overs reaping figures of 5/100.
Kyabram bowlers have a competitive but far from unbeatable score to defend this week so will need to be on the job to deliver Kyabram’s fifth win for the season.
¦ Kyabram’s B grade side is in the box seat against Central Park-St Brendan’s after a deadly spell of bowling from Kanwal Singh.
Singh took 6/30 off a marathon 23.3 overs as the combine dipped to 9/105 before declaring.
Kyabram lost opener Nathan Pell for one and was 1/15 at stumps in its run chase.
¦ Kyabram’s D grade side claimed the premiership points against Undera without too many worries.
With only nine players, Undera could muster only 52 off 15.5 overs, with opening bowlers Mick Rosser and Matt McDonald bagging five wickets between them.
Kyabram opener Lachy Turpin (20) and Billy Cookson (13) wiped off 31 runs in the run chase, during which Kyabram lost three wickets in securing the win.
