Kylie Holman passing
Kyabram Football Netball Club players and supporters were shocked to learn of the death of Kylie Holman over the festive season.
Kylie is survived by her husband, Peter, and is the mother of Kyabram multi-premiership player Tom Holman and former Bomber, Carlton and now Gold Coast Suns utility Nick Holman, another son Benny and a daughter Katie.
Kyabram Football Netball Club president Peter Learmonth said his club offered its sincere condolences to the Holman family.
John Baldwin remembered
Rushworth and its cricket club lost a stalwart prior to Christmas with the passing of John Baldwin.
John, 50, lost a battle to prostate cancer, which he had been fighting for some time.
John’s popularity was obvious with the large roll-up of mourners who attended his funeral.
John was a more than handy all-rounder.
Cricketing clubmate of many years standing Peter Raglus told the wake how John often turned heads with his arrival at cricket grounds on a noisy motorbike.
John is survived by his wife, Pauline, and daughters Samantha and Chloe.
Undera announces new-look coaching lineup
Undera Football Netball Club announced football coaching appointments leading up to the festive break.
Former Longwood player Mitch Dickason has been appointed senior coach, replacing Darron Batties while Mooroopna reserves player Danny Hatton has taken on the reserves coaching role.
Dickason was being groomed to take over the Longwood coaching position next year and Undera is happy to get a player with his experience and coaching potential to take on the role at such a late stage of the year.
He is expected to have a team in place to assist him at Undera, including his father, a former coach of TAC League club Dandenong Stingrays.
Sporting legend Peg Curtis remembered
One of the best sportswomen – arguably the best – of her generation in this region, Peg Curtis, died in Shepparton in early December at the age of 93.
When I was growing up and taking an interest in sport the name Peg Curtis was frequently mentioned.
Once Peg took up a sport – and she tried her hand at many sporting pursuits – she gave her all to get the most out of it.
And usually did.
Whether it was tennis, golf, netball, softball, squash or table tennis Peg played it with unwavering passion and authority.
She also proved just as potent a coach in several sports after her playing days.
Tongala ties up new recruits?
Could Tongala Football Club be on the verge of delivering more high-profile recruits for the Murray Football League’s 2022 season?
After luring former AFL player Brock McLean from GVL club Shepparton United to its ranks for the coming season, coach Jordan Souter has announced a couple more prize pick-ups could be in the pipeline.
‘‘We are speaking to a couple of prospective recruits but there is nothing definite at this stage but we are hoping,’’ Souter said.
Souter said the possibility of Top End fly-in stars Cam Illett and Darren Ewing limiting their games with the club this year was the reason why the Blues were still looking to bolster their ranks.
Souter was happy with his team’s pre-season campaign prior to Christmas and said from next Monday training would be stepped up when the players hit the track again after the festive season.
Timbercutters without a coach
A lot of footy clubs have experienced what Picola Football Netball League club Mathoura is grappling with at the moment.
Finding a coach for the new season plus forming a committee to run the club are hurdles the club is desperately trying to negotiate.
It hasn’t been for the lack of trying but it has reached a desperate stage after a mass exodus of players from last season and the stepping down of coach Darcy Robinson.
But there is a glimpse of hope for the club with many of the club’s Under 17 players from last season indicating they will stick with the club, which will improve numbers.
Historic league programs wanted
If you played or had any interest with clubs in the former Coreen and District Football League in the Riverina and have any match programs from those days, the NSW Australian Football History Society would love to hear from you.
The society is trying to complete a collection of league programs and has already collected 200.
Programs from 1953, 1954, 1959 and 1994 in particular are being sought.
Formed in 1909 the Coreen League foundation clubs were Coreen, Buraja, Ringwood, Redlands and Shannonvale.
Jerilderie, Oaklands, Savernake and Colleambally spent time in the league before it folded in 2007.
The selection of Coreen and District match programs can be viewed at:
