The much-anticipated top of the ladder clash against Cobram started as quite an arm wrestle as both teams tried to assert their dominance. Jett Peters playing his first full senior game was using his skills to propel Mulwala forward and Sean Robinson had Mulwala on the scoreboard first.
Cobram were quick to respond and took an early lead into quarter time after some inaccuracy from Mulwala’s forwards which could have had them closer.
The second quarter saw Cobram’s running game open up and the pressure on the Mulwala defense intensified. Lachlan Rouell and James Wilson were doing their best but the delivery to Cobram’s forwards was hard to combat.
Jackson Gash and Flynn Fletcher were doing a great job getting back to help the defense but the amount of forward entries was proving difficult for the Mulwala defense to stop the flood of goals. Owen Conway was having another great game as the number one ruck and was ably assisted by Harrison Meade getting around to all the contests on the large Cobram ground.
Hard running and a precise shot for goal by Adam Rouell in the 3rd quarter saw Mulwala finally get another goal after a half of football but the damage had been done.
Lach Rouell was a clear best on ground for Mulwala and the team will have to reset before another tough game this week against Tongala.
Reserves
Cobram 12.14.86 defeated Mulwala 2.3.15.
The Reserves were up and about early and a couple of strong marks from Zav McPhee in the forward line converted to goals and it looked like the game would be a close contest with the scores even at quarter time.
Angus Heslin in the ruck was working well with onballers Matthew McLachlan and Chris O’Neill giving Mulwala plenty of forward entries that they did not capitalize on.
Nathan Beasley was marking strongly across the backline and using his runners in Cameron Carling and Isaac Pitches to clear the area but it was coming back just as fast.
Josh Ednie and Kyle Abikhair worked hard all game, but Cobram were able to find loose men all over the ground and if not for inaccurate kicking the scoreline could have been a lot worse at the end.
Goals: Z. McPhee 2.
Best: J. Ednie, A. Heslin, K. Abikhair, C. O’Neill, N. Beasley, M. McLachlan.
Thirds
Cobram 8.8.56 defeated Mulwala 4.3.27.
After a close contest with Rumbalara the week before the thirds went into the game very positive about a good result. Coach House stressed the importance of effort and the boys again were delivering it in spades.
Some accurate kicking by Cobram in front of goals saw them take a slender lead into quarter time. Lochlin Harvey and Dillon Kirchen were solid contributors all over the ground and Josh Eder and Riley Mitchell were playing some great footy across half back while Jai Sneddon up from the fourths was handy up forward kicking a couple of goals to keep Mulwala in the game.
An even second half on the scoreboard exemplified the huge effort from all the boys as Mulwala fought the game out well with many positives to come from the game.
Goals: J. Sneddon 2, D. Kirchen 1, J. Wheeler 1.
Best: L. Harvey, E. Lay, J. Eder, D. Kirchen, R. Mitchell, B. Reid.
Fourths
Cobram 2.5.17 defeated by Mulwala 6.6.42.
The Fourths were taking on the also undefeated Cobram team in the early game and were all very eager to play against another finals aspirant.
The first quarter was a challenge for players and supporters as the thick fog began to descend on the ground however Mulwala were able to handle the conditions best and were providing plenty of options for forwards in Jai Sneddon and Henry Donovan to capitalize on.
Beau Sissons was using his pace around the wings and delivering his left foot bullets into the forwards with precision as Axel Saunders and Van Kreeck began to get their run and carry games going to great effect.
Archie Purtle and Nash McNamara were tough as nails in some very hard contests as the Cobram boys began to get frustrated with Mulwala’s ability to control the ball in the second half leading to a four goal advantage at three quarter time.
Zach Wheeler, Jace Gove and Oliver Nagle played great games in the backline to hold off any Cobram advances and Baxter Donovan and Oliver Watson won plenty of the ball around the ground all game. The whole team contributed to the convincing win pleasing Coach Kreeck and have now set themselves a game clear on top of the ladder.
Goals: J. Sneddon 3, V. Kreeck 1, K. Sullivan 1, H. Donovan 1.
Best: A. Purtle, N. McNamara, B. Sissons, V. Kreeck, A. Saunders, O. Watson.
