This was a good effort and shows we are competitive in this division.
Rob Dennis, Joe Chant, Noreen Earl and Graeme Hubble played Angel Manneken and won by four shots.
At the break Merrigum led by two shots and after the break little separated the two teams.
Luckily Merrigum picked up five shots on end 23 to make the game safe.
John and Carol Firmer with Neil Gardiner and John Bailey drew L. Sinden and won narrowly by one shot.
At end 18 they were nine shots up, but the opposition rallied and just failed to overtake the Merrigum combination.
Barry Parsons was up against Fiona Smith and lost by 11 shots.
On Saturday we hosted Stanhope and won by 10 shots.
Rob Dennis, Joe Chant, Graeme Hubble and Clive Baxter played Cyril Evans and won by 11 shots.
Merrigum started slowly and it took 10 ends for it to reach the lead which it held for the rest of the game.
At the insistence of the Stanhope lead I have to describe the last bowl of the day.
On the last end Merrigum held two shots until Cyril Evans drew shot with his last bowl.
After some discussion it was decided to hit the shot bowl off centre and push it through a small gap between two Merrigum bowls.
Robert managed a magnificent up shot and scored five shots, much to the dismay of our opposition.
David Pettifer, Greg Pell, Stan Coldwell and John Bailey drew H. Crilly and won by three shots.
Once again on end 18 the Merrigum boys had a 10-shot lead, but could only manage three shots for the last seven ends which just happened to be the winning margin. Well done!
Jim Arthur played P. Myers and had a great struggle, but went down by one shot.
On the last end with one bowl to come Merrigum held two shots and the win, but unfortunately the Stanhope skipper drove and picked up two shots to snatch the game away from a disappointed Merrigum team.
John Firmer played Ken Hoppner and lost by three shots.
This was a great comeback by the Merrigum combination because at the conclusion of end 11 the score was Merrigum four points and Stanhope 19 points.
Well done and this just shows the importance of a team contribution to the overall win even though they did not win their rink.
Keep up the good work on the club games.
The Ethel Younger day is on Sunday, February 14 at 1pm.
