Park committee of management chair Marg Allen said the master plan would guide the development of the park for the next 20 years.
“As part of developing the master plan, we sought feedback from the community about their aspirations for the park. More than 300 people completed surveys and three submissions were also received, which greatly assisted in shaping the final plan,” she said.
“This exciting plan will help fulfil the vision of Kyabram Fauna Park being northern Victoria’s premier wildlife attraction by improving the visitor experience and ensuring contemporary zoo-keeping principles.
“The plan is a long-term vision and has been designed to enable development at the park to be undertaken in stages as funding becomes available.”
Ms Allen said the park would see changes to several of its areas — from the animal enclosures to the café.
“It includes upgrades to the park entrance, café and education centre, plus redevelopment of the wetlands,” she said.
“The ever-popular reptile house will be upgraded, and the master plan also includes a nocturnal house and safari-style camping.
“Nature play for kids is in the plan, along with upgrades to animal exhibits, so visitors can enjoy getting close to nature.
“Native Australian species remain the park’s focus; however, there is flexibility to consider displaying exotic animals in the future if they are deemed to be of significant benefit.”
The master plan was developed by Jon Coe Design in partnership with Campaspe Shire Council, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, park staff, park committee of management and the local community, and was funded by Regional Development Victoria.
The park's general manager and committee of management have prioritised the projects within the master plan and are seeking funding for these works.
Some items in the master plan are already under way or completed, including acquiring new native species, establishing a koala browse plantation and constructing a headwall at the lake viewing area.
