Widely considered a guitar virtuoso, Knopfler will release a new album One Deep River on April 12, his 10th solo venture since splitting from Dire Straits, which is known for the hits, Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing and Brothers in Arms.
In an interview with EFE at his recording studio in London, Knopfler reflected on his prolific career and on his new work.
His new album One Deep River features 12 melodic, slow songs and poetic lyrics in which there are "a little bit of lying and a little bit of telling the truth", he says.
Unlike other established artists, Knopfler does not renounce his beginnings. Instead, he speaks with obvious affection for Dire Straits, the band that catapulted him to worldwide fame and whose greatest hits are what his countless fans come for at each concert.
"I love it," Knopfler says, "because it's part of the story, it's part of the tour, it's part of the life, it's part of the performance."
Regarding the classics he wrote for Dire Straits such as Money for Nothing, Knopfler insists that it's "nice to play them for people".
"When people come, they come to celebrate that relationship (they had with the group). It's so important to them," he points out.
Every time Knopfler performs those songs on stage, many of which have become anthems, the guitarist assures that even today he tries to "always find something new in them".
"You've got to find something in it that's real, and I think people respond to songs the way they've always responded to songs - with commitment and passion."
