WA win after Cartwright's miracle catch

It is their 15th one-day title and cements WA's reputation as the kings of white-ball cricket, after Perth Scorchers also reclaimed the BBL title this summer.

NSW were cruising in the 45th over at 7-204 in reply to WA's 9-225, with No.3 Moises Henriques pacing the innings on 43 and Ben Dwarshuis also well-set.

Henriques' firmly-hit drive off spinner D'Arcy Short looked certain to reach the boundary, before Cartwright dived horizontally at long on and somehow managed to hold on to the catch as he landed heavily.

NSW were dismissed for 207 two overs later, with Dwarshuis unbeaten on 31.

"That turned the game on its head, really," WA captain Ashton Turner said.

"That's the best (catch) I've seen, I was absolutely stunned, particularly when you add the moment of the game.

"Back end of a final, to catch the opposition's best player - it's the difference between us winning and not winning.

"Clearly Moises had the game under control."

NSW captain Kurtis Patterson and WA's man of the match AJ Tye, who snared 4-30 and was on a hat-trick, had similar sentiments.

All three also noted that it was typical of Cartwright's fielding excellence.

"It was a bloody remarkable catch ... (but) I wasn't overly surprised," Patterson said.

WA won the pulsating final despite injuries to Test paceman Jhye Richardson (hamstring) and batter Shaun Marsh (knee).

While Turner said Marsh's injury is probably minor, he said Richardson's "doesn't look great".

After winning the toss, WA slumped to 6-89 before Richardson played a crucial role in their rearguard fightback with 44.

Matthew Kelly and Jason Behrendorff then put on 52, a WA record for the 10th wicket in one-dayers, and that partnership proved the difference.

Kelly made 27 not out and Behrendorff belted two sixes in the 50th over for his unbeaten 24.

Matthew Gilkes dropped a sitter off Kelly when he had only made two.

Gilkes then caught Richardson in the deep and it was given out, despite the fielder appearing to touch the boundary rope with his foot.

Daniel Sams snared 3-45 and Adam Zampa, who was also on a hat-trick, took 3-40.

Sams backed up with 42, while Aaron Hardie took 3-41 as WA reversed the result of last year's one-day final.

"We feel like we were a little bit off today, we didn't play like we know we could," Turner said.

"Often when that's the case, to win games you need some really special moments to drag you back into the game."

Patterson, by contrast, said it was "one that got away".

With border restrictions eased, WA can now return home and focus on the Sheffield Shield, which they have not won since 1999.

"It's awesome to win one-day flags and Big Bash titles, but we've no secret of the fact in WA that the pinnacle for us is to win a Sheffield Shield," Turner said.
