Only, unlike most other schoolboys, Akon had more to show for his summer than simply lying around the house and watching the hours tick by.
Last week the teenager, who has been described as "Australia's hottest young forward", was thrown into his first start in the A-League Men in the intensity of a Sydney derby.
Labelled "fearless" by coach Ufuk Talay, Akon showed no signs of stage fright to register three assists for Sydney FC as they came from behind to thump Western Sydney Wanderers 4-1 and climb up to second spot on the table.
"I'm South Sudanese, my community, my family, I was just born like this," Akon told AAP.
"I just let God do everything, as long as he does what I need to do, I'll do what I need to do and that's where the fearlessness comes out.
"Three assists is good, one is good enough as long as we get the win."
It would have only added to the Wanderers' pain that Akon, who is Sydney's youngest debutant, was once one of their own.
The forward spent years in the Wanderers' youth system and has to pass the turn-off to their training ground every day as he hitches a ride with midfielder Rhys Youlley to Sydney's performance centre.
How and why he was allowed to slip through the cracks is a question the Wanderers may be asking themselves for years to come.
Sydney sporting director Alex Baumjohann couldn't believe his luck when he was able to convince Akon to cross the city divide.
He first spotted Akon playing up an age for the Joeys (Australia's under 17s) just after his 15th birthday.
"I knew after 10 minutes that he was a special player," Baumjohann told AAP.
Baumjohann tried to sign Akon last January and when the teenager netted a hat-trick against Saudi Arabia in February, he thought there was no way the Wanderers wouldn't lock him down to a long-term deal.
"To my surprise, they didn't… to me it was crazy to see that the Wanderers didn't put him on a contract," Baumjohann said.
"Akol is an outstanding young player on and off the pitch and very mature for a 16-year-old.
"He is a generational talent but it's important to remember that he is still very young."
Baumjohann tied Akon down to a three-year deal with Sydney last June.
Until last week he mostly had to be content with substitute appearances, a position Akon is happy with as Talay's men get ready to face fellow premiership rivals Auckland on Saturday.
"I don't mind if I don't score as long as I play well, the goal will come eventually," Akon said.
"I'm used to a lot of minutes and I'm a fearless guy, I like to take challenges on."
