Thriving Muscat extends club stay in Japan

Kevin Muscat has signed a contract extension with Yokohama F. Marinos for another season as he closes on a breakthrough title with the J.League club.

Muscat's Yokohama are two points clear on top of the J1 League table with two games to play, despite losing their past two matches.

They will win the title on Saturday, with a round to spare, if they beat Urawa Reds at home and second-placed Kawasaki Frontale fail to defeat Vissel Kobe.

Otherwise it will go down to the final round, away to Vissel Kobe.

"We are pleased to inform you that we have renewed the contract with Kevin Muscat and will continue to lead the top team next season," the club said in a statement on its website, translated to English.

Muscat, who joined Yokohama in July 2021, is attempting to better his second-placed finish in his debut season.

The 49-year-old is following in the footsteps of former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou, who famously led Yokohama to the 2019 title.

The extension continues Muscat's rebound from anÂ ill-fated stint at the helm of Belgian top-flight outfit Sint-Truiden in 2020, where he was sacked after six months.
