That’s the question that Hazel Smith is trying to educate children on in her latest book, I Want to be Kind.
I Want to be Kind is a follow-along story for young children about what makes a kind person, and that sometimes you need to be strong to be kind.
The 79-year-old author said the book was a message of hope and comfort, written in a way that was easy for children to understand.
“It’s a guideline to children on what the best kind of kindness is,” she said.
“It also has a gentle Christian message of the kindest person who ever lived, Jesus.”
Continuing her message of kindness, Hazel doesn’t want to make any profits from her book. Instead, she asks that you place a donation to Teen Challenge or to the cancer support tin when picking up your copy at Kyabram Newsagency.
“Already this year I’ve given away 400 copies of my books to children,” she said.
“I don’t want to make any profit off of them.”
Hazel moved to Kyabram in 2008 when she and her husband retired. When he became unwell, she nursed him until he passed six years ago.
In 2018 she decided to release her first children’s book, titled I Miss my Daddy, followed by her second in 2020, titled I Have an Invisible Friend, both of which follow the Christian message of her third book.
Having always loved writing and making children smile, Hazel says she has finally found her purpose in life.
I Want to be Kind will be available to purchase at the Kyabram Newsagency this week.
