Green in line for $3m IPL jackpot on eve of Ashes Test

With the third Test match starting Wednesday morning Cameron Green will be aiming for a good night's sleep Tuesday, but should he wake up in the early hours it would be understandable were he to turn his phone on to check on events at the Indian Premier League auction.

The West Australian is one of four players in Australia's Test squad to go under the hammer in Abu Dhabi in the auction, which due to start at 0130 Adelaide time, and he is in line for the biggest payday of the quartet by far.

Green will be the third player bid on, after Devon Conway and Jake Fraser-McGurk, and with allrounders in demand could go for 18 crore rupees, just under A$3 million.Â

That is the maximum earning for foreign players at the auction under a new IPL regulation, so he won't be able to match Mitch Starc's A$4m jackpot in 2024, but having already collected A$2.9m in the 2023 auction Green is unlikely to be too disappointed.

Green scored 452 runs for Mumbai Indians at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28 that campaign, so it won't be a surprise if Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, the two teams in most need of an overseas allrounder, engage in a bidding war for his services.

Starc is not in this year's auction. He is one of ten Australians already retained, along with Test teammates Pat Cummins and Travis Head. Josh Hazlewood, currently injured, has unsurprisingly also been retained by defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Steve Smith, Josh Inglis and Beau Webster are up for grabs, among 19 Aussies in total to have made the auction shortlist. With 31 overseas slots available and 110 foreign players listed, most may be disappointed.

Three of the England team could also be distracted on the eve of the Test with Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue in the auction, along with the player Tongue replaces in Adelaide, Gus Atkinson.
