Campaspe Murray River Abilities Unleashed Adults will run from 10am to noon, with Unleashed Kids running from 12.30pm to 2.30pm on Wednesday, October 15 at Echuca Stadium, 244 High St, Echuca.
The day is being organised by Disability Sports Australia in collaboration with Campaspe Shire Council and Murray River Council.
“The idea is that for a lot of people with disability, they are not aware of local programs that they can actually get involved in,” Disability Sports Australia chief executive officer Aidan Shaw said.
“The day gives them a chance to try a whole range of different sports.
“It is really important because people with disability don’t have the same access to sport as those without disability.
“There is actually a lot of opportunity in mainstream sport for people with disability that they are not aware of.”
The initiative aims to foster social connections and promote health benefits in an inclusive, welcoming setting.
This year’s activities could be wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, AFL and cricket, blending mainstream sports with those specifically designed for people with disability.
“Being able to do this provides great social connections, friendship, belonging and also more importantly, it gives really important physical, social and mental health benefits that sports provide,” Aidan said.
“The other aspect, too, is that it gives disability providers the chance to bring their clients down and do those activities in a really safe and welcoming environment as well.”
Disability Sport Australia focuses on grassroots sport, ensuring that anyone can participate in any sport they choose in a way that suits them.
