Men’s Shed calls for younger members

The Tatura Men’s Shed isn’t your usual run-of-the-mill men’s shed. Why? Because it truly has something for everyone.

Whether you want to bring your own hobby into the space, learn something new from the other members, or just meet new people and make friends while enjoying a weekly lunch, it’s a pretty special place.

A few times a year, vice-president Tom Perry welcomes me into the shed so I can see first-hand what everyone is up to — and on my last visit, it didn’t disappoint.

From woodworking and welding to refurbishing furniture and tackling the jobs tradesmen won’t do, there’s plenty to get involved with.

However, at the moment, the shed is keen to attract younger retirees, who bring fresh energy and new skills to the group.

Tom said it was important to get people in their 60s involved so they can contribute, learn, and have fun while keeping the shed dynamic.

“It’s really all about creating more friendships in the community,” Tom said.

“Come and have a go at whatever you like, or show us something new, or just come for a chat and lunch — it’s a space where everyone is welcome.”

Exciting plans at the Men’s Shed this year include installing a new floor in the dining room, making the space more welcoming and hygienic for all members.

With weekly lunches, social activities, and the chance to try whatever catches your interest, the Tatura Men’s Shed is as much about community and friendship as it is about sharing skills and enjoying new experiences.
