The outspoken MP from Western Australia is a fierce opponent of Australia's climate targets and has been urging the Liberals to walk away from any commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
Coalition backbenchers will have a chance to discuss the issue during a hotly anticipated sit-down with opposition energy spokesman Dan Tehan in Canberra on Friday morning.
Mr Tehan has been criss-crossing the globe as he leads a review of the coalition's policy, including its commitment to net zero following its disastrous election defeat in May.
Calls are growing internally for the party to quickly come to a position, from both supporters and critics of net zero.
In an email to supporters, Mr Hastie said normally he would attend such a meeting.
"But I have an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon in Perth after injuring my left shoulder during a jiu-jitsu lesson," he wrote.
"I'm getting old, and time is short."
Mr Hastie said while the meeting wouldn't set a binding position on energy policy, it would set the conditions for what comes next.
Party figures have been at pains to play down the significance of the meeting, saying it will not result in a vote or position on net zero; it will simply be an opportunity for members to have their say.Â
MPs were briefed on the progress of Mr Tehan's review at a joint party room meeting on Tuesday, and have had regular committee meetings to ask questions of policy experts.
But an increasingly vocal rump of net zero sceptics is unsatisfied with the progress.
Mr Hastie's email to supporters also included a five-point energy manifesto, calling for Australia to drill for oil, invest in local refineries, repeal all legislation associated with net zero and end the ban on nuclear power.
Other parliamentarians that have publicly called for the coalition to drop net zero include Matt Canavan, Michael McCormack and Tony Pasin, while moderate Senator Jane Hume and Mr Tehan have indicated their support for net zero has not changed.
Whether the coalition's energy plan contains a net zero target or not, there is a strong chance nuclear energy will still play a role, despite the party unsuccessfully making nuclear a centrepiece of its failed election campaign.
As part of his review, Mr Tehan has travelled to the United States to speak with top nuclear officials and has continued to call on the government to end the moratorium on nuclear power.
