The Kyabram Bush Verse Group’s annual competition, held at the Fauna Park’s education centre from 9.30am today, October 9, will see students compete in the individual section for the Jolly Swagman trophy (and $50 cash), or the team section for the Waltzing Matilda award.
‘‘Some of the kids get quite enthused; for instance, if it’s about the jolly swagman they’ll come in with a battered shirt and an old hat,’’ Mr Parkinson said.
Past winners have included St Augustine’s College student Chloe Villani, who won the Jolly Swagman award with a rendition of Banjo Paterson’s poem A Dog’s Mistake.
More than 50 primary school students competed in 2018.
The following night, adults are invited to recite poetry or spin a yarn at the Kyabram Club, in an event put on with Kyabram Lions Club. For details call Les Parkinson on 5852 2281.
