To most parents that might seem like a recipe for disaster – and bad hair cuts.
But for Nate Schubach and Mia Clydesdale, cutting and shaving their hair off was the last task in an almost year long campaign to raise money for people living with cancer.
And their parents couldn’t be prouder.
While the final tally is still being totalled, the final figure is well over $20 000.
The difference that will make to families experiencing cancer is both incredibly touching and practical.
But the reason Mia and Nate decided to help was refreshingly simple.
After getting her long locks cut off, Mia had this to say.
“I feel good about what I did to help others.”
And while Nate reported that his head feels a bit weird – “like a tennis ball” – he too was happy to play his part.
“I’m happy with the money we raised that will help people,” he said.
Mum's Mel Dillon and Bec Schubach thanked the businesses and people who had helped their children raise the impressive figure.
They were inundated with raffle items and donations for their family fun day on Saturday, where the big hair cut took place.
“We thank the community so much for all their support, it's been incredible,” Mel said.
The Gift founder Liz Dillon was emotional when she spoke about Mia and Nate’s bravery.
“It just shows what young people can do,” she said.
“Mia had such long beautiful hair and it was such a big deal for her, and then for Nate to also get on board and just tackle all this fundraising with such enthusiasm is just amazing.
“I’m just super, super proud. That money will help so many people who really need it.”
