Graham Rd, the major route between Kyabram and Echuca, was closed between Scobie Rd and Curr Rd from about 1.15pm to 10.45pm, and traffic was diverted through a large detour.
A 72-year-old driver from Bright, who was travelling west along Graham Rd, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she remained in a serious but stable condition.
The driver of the second vehicle, which was travelling south along Curr Rd, was a 23-year-old man from Tongala. He was not injured in the crash.
Detectives from both Campaspe Highway Patrol and the major collision unit from Melbourne are investigating the incident.
Echuca Sergeant Paul Nichol urged drivers to be attentive, particularly going into the Christmas period.
“A moment of distraction can cost a life,” he said.
“We urge drivers to be really careful on our roads, particularly as they come up to intersections."
