Having been out of commission since December 2019 due to maintenance and COVID-19, the theatre, along with its 20 volunteers, is set to celebrate its return on January 23 with a screening of the Australian film Rams.
Ky Plaza Theatre Committee chair Lisa Ratcliffe said while the theatre was never in any real danger of closing thanks to being owned by the Campaspe Shire Council, it was still disappointing to see such a great service be out of commission for so long.
“It was a bit of a hole for all of us. It was good to have a break in a sense, but we had quite a few people asking us when it’ll be back. I think a lot of people are excited to see it open again,” she said.
“It really wasn’t viable for us, even in the early stages when other theatres opened up. We wouldn’t have been able to recover the cost even with volunteer staff.”
In addition to screening two sessions a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the Ky Plaza Theatre also plays local theatre productions and hosts private functions.
“It’s a great building and a community asset,” Ms Ratcliffe said.
“If you measure our importance on attendance rates, it might seem not very important. We get nowhere near capacity on movie nights, but I feel it would be sadly missed if it were to close.
“We look forward to welcoming everybody back.”
The Ky Plaza Theatre will be screening the film Rams on Saturday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 26 at 7.30pm.
The Ky Plaza Theatre Committee is also on the lookout for volunteers.
