The Victorian Government has announced a $3 million investment to boost the supply of native woody shrub and tree seeds through BushBank, the state’s largest habitat-restoration program.
Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos said the program was “our most ambitious habitat restoration program”.
“(BushBank) is planting millions of native trees and plants across more than 20,000 hectares of land across Victoria,” he said.
“Today’s seeds will be tomorrow’s habitat, a vital source of shelter and protection for wildlife and an important tool in our fight against climate change.”
The funding forms part of the $77 million BushBank initiative, supporting seed-sector businesses, Traditional Owner groups and nurseries across regions including the Goulburn Broken, Wimmera, West Gippsland and North Central.
Grants will support the expansion of seed orchards, the purchase of harvesting machinery and the annual propagation of hundreds of thousands of seedlings.
