All Kyabram GV triples final

Triple threat: Josh Carwright, Brett Reiner and David Cartwright after winning the GV triples event against a trio of their Kyabram pennant teammates.

Kyabram has claimed its first Goulburn Valley bowls title of the season, David Cartwright, son Josh and recruit Brett Reiner combining to win the state triples title in an all-Kyabram final.

They beat Connor Trewren, David Townsend and Jacob Cartwright 23-11 in the 18-end final, breaking the match open after a tight opening five ends.

The eventual champions trailed by one to that point, but secured six shots on the seventh end — amid a seven-end run that saw them open a 14-shot lead by the 13th end.

Trewren and his team won seven of the 18 ends, but apart from a three-shot collect on the 17th end never threatened the lead.

Reiner and the Cartwrights won the opening-round match against a Mooroopna trio by three shots before dominating a Seymour trio 24-4 in round two.

In the final round they beat Tatura’s star-studded team of Russell Locke, Brendan and Nicholas Boyd, who all bowl as skips with Hilltop’s division one weekend pennant team.

That 16-8 scoreline saw them qualify for the final against Trewren, Townsend and Jacob Cartwright. They scored 23-7 and 19-14 wins in the lead up against champion triples teams from Avenel and Yea.

David Cartwright, Greg Shilling, Trewren and Townsend will compete in the GV state fours event alongside a second Kyabram team made up of father-son combinations Paul and Liam McInness, Darren and Henry Boswood, on December 2.

They are in separate sections in the eight-team draw, so another all-Kyabram final could be on the cards.

Lea Beattie will lead Kyabram’s team in the women’s GV state fours, while Stanhope’s Hayley Hancock, Jorja Ponton, Teena Harris and Fletcer will also compete.
