New KDL draw
Footy fans, particularly those who follow the Kyabram and District Football Netball League, should take note there has been a new draw released.

The original KDL draw had to be scrapped after Ardmona’s withdrawal.
The new draw is in the McPherson Media Group’s Football & Netball 2022 liftout in today’s Free Press.
The KDL season kicks off this weekend.
Keep topping up
Traps received a call from a reader who said he couldn’t understand why some motorists kept topping up with fuel to save money.
We diplomatically informed him that if the price of fuel kept going up it was in fact cheaper to keep topping up rather than wait until the tank was empty and then paying the current price.
He thanked us and headed off ... we suspect to the nearest fuel outlet.
Bikie caught at 190km/h
This motorcyclist could be in real strife.
He was allegedly clocked at 190km/h in a 60km/h zone on The Boulevard in Shepparton and a preliminary blood test allegedly returned positive to drugs.
And to plunge further into the mire he didn’t have a licence.
Dry two weeks
Up to Sunday Kyabram Weather Station had recorded no rain since Thursday, March 17.
But since last Tuesday maximum temperatures had not exceeded 30°C although the mercury was expected to nudge that mark on Monday and yesterday.
Last Friday was the first strong hint that summer was behind us, with the minimum temperature dropping to 10.9°C, the lowest minimum since February 3 when it dipped to 9.3°C.
Kyabram has received 55.4mm of rain in March and has had a total of 103mm so far in 2022.
Hammer is Liberal candidate
Shepparton businesswoman Cheryl Hammer will be the Liberal candidate for Shepparton in the November state election.
Ms Hammer previously stood in 2018 and gained 25.56 per cent of the primary vote and 44.70 per cent of the two-party preferred vote in the election won by Suzanne Sheed, with 55.3 per cent.
Ms Hammer is the philanthropic Greater Shepparton Foundation chief executive.
Beach closure kickback
Suggestions that the Tocumwal beach should be closed to campers has stirred up feelings in the Murray River town.
There are those in favour of such a bold move but others who won’t have a (sand) bar of it.
It has been estimated campers provide $1.2 million a year in tourism revenue.
Berrigan Shire Council has weighed into the debate, with chief executive Karina Ewer saying there must be investment at the beach to meet standards to allow camping to continue.
Big Keno collect
It seems playing Keno in clubs along the Murray River can be very fruitful.
In late January a Tocumwal couple picked up $1.4 million while having a dabble in Keno at the Mulwala Golf Resort while waiting for their lunch.
Now a Finley man, who decided to upgrade his Keno numbers, has had a $84,879.70 windfall at the Tocumwal Bowls and Golf Club.
Not quite $1.4 million, admittedly, but still a nice couple of minutes’ work.
And while mentioning luck, an Echuca local had a decent slice of it last Friday night.
In a Moama Bowling Club competition, he won not one but two Kia cars in a major draw that had thousands of entrants.
Grand return
Cobram’s Grand Central Hotel is back in business.
New owners from Melbourne have given the well-positioned pub a huge makeover particularly in the public bar, sports area, dining room and beer garden.
Titles at Nagambie
Nagambie is hosting the Australian Rowing Championships this week after a last-minute switch of venue.
The event was scheduled to be hosted at the Sydney International Regatta Centre but water contamination forced organisers to look for another venue.
The shift will also help Nagambie’s bid to stage the Commonwealth Games rowing events if Victoria’s bid to stage the games in 2026 is successful.
$2 million for creeks
Murray Irrigation has been awarded almost $2 million to improve connectivity with two creeks in the Murray River system at Wakool.
The work involves the Jimaringle and Cockran creeks and will include the upgrade of nine creek crossings and the installation of eight fish culverts.
Deniliquin airport first
Deniliquin is claiming another first, with the arrival last week of a Beechcraft KingAir 260 plane at its airport.
The six-seater plane was made in Witchita, Kansas, especially for the Deniliquin service, and is the first of its type to be used in Australia.
It took under 30 minutes for the plane to make the trip from the Essendon airport to Deniliquin.
Plains-wanderer release
One of Australia’s most endangered birds, the plains-wanderer, will hopefully abound on the Hay plains in future years.
Ten of the ground-dwelling species have just been released near Hay.
There is thought to be fewer than 1000 of these birds in the wild and their importance to native grasslands and ecosystems is vital.
Square Dinkum
G’day
Little Tommy greeted his older sister’s boyfriend very enthusiastically by saying, ‘‘That harmonica you gave me for my birthday last year is easily the best present I have ever been given. It is making me so much money.’’
‘’I’m glad you like it,’’ replied the sister’s boyfriend. ‘’You must be able to play it very well if it’s making you some money.’’
‘’No, not really,’’ answered Tommy, ‘‘It’s because Mum and Dad both give me a dollar a day not to play it.’’
Hooroo!
