Could this be a weather record for Kyabram?
Between October 25, 2024 and May 1 this year, Kyabam’s maximum temperature did not dip below 20°C.
That’s 181 successive days of 20°C-plus temperatures.
The run was broken on May 1 when the maximum temperature reached only 19°C but another 14 days of 20°C-plus maximum temperatures followed up to last Friday when it reached a top of 19.7°C.
Sunday was even cooler, with a 15°C top temperature.
Temperatures well over a top of 30°C have also been commonplace over the past five months.
November produced 15 days when the temperature rose above 30°C and on two days of that month it climbed to 40°C, including a summer high of 43°C on November 6.
December had 15 days over 30°C and two above 40°C, while the mercury topped 30°C in January 19 times with one day exceeding 40°C.
There was no let-up from the heat in March — the first month of autumn — with 16 days producing 20°C-plus temperatures.
April also had an extra share of warm days, with 26 days reaching 20°C or over and five days exceeding 30°C.
And the heat has lingered into May, with 13 days over 20°C after the prolonged hot spell was broken on May 1 with a 19°C top reading.
Unfortunately though that while the summer was hot and the autumn has lingered longer this year, rain has been the main weather topic — because of the lack of it.
Only 74mm has been recorded so far this year, which is well below below the long-term average of 173mm.
Kyabram has received no heavy falls of rain since April 16 when 19mm was recorded.
And yes, there has been a good reminder winter is almost with us with the temperature dropping to 1.4°C on Monday morning of this week.
Did you know ...
Traps reader was surprised with the answer that came up when he googled to find out in which Kyabram street was the Kyabram Police Station before it moved into a new location on the corner of Allan and Haslem Sts:
The Kyabram Police Station was located in Albion Street.
Specifically, it was situated on the corner of Smith and William streets, where the old Library Hall used to be.
Smith and William Sts? Hmmmm.
Still available
Just a reminder the Kyabram’s Doctors of Endurance publication is available from the Kyabram library complex, 19 Lake Rd, Kyabram.

Support for hall
The tiny town of Devenish has received a windfall of $50,000 to ensure it continues to thrive.
The Victorian Government grant is part of the Tiny Towns fund and will be used in a project to keep the local public hall thriving.
Government funding of between $5000 and $50,000 is also designed to help 11 other communities across Victoria flourish.
New mural for region
Waaia is to get a mural on the town’s grain silo.
Community members joined local and state government dignataries recently to hear Regional Development Minister Jaclyn Symes announce a grant of $32,000 for renowned artist Tim Bowtell to paint the mural.
Service needed
NSW Ambulance has publicly apologised after an elderly Tocumwal man was forced to wait 40 minutes for help after collapsing in a neighbour’s shed and striking his head, knocking him unconscious.
It took 40 minutes for an ambulance to arrive from Berrigan to treat the 81-year-old.
The case will add more grunt to Tocumwal’s bid to get a permanent ambulance presence in the town.
Highway upgrades
Work has started on a $10 million project for safety improvements on the Newell Hwy in the Finley town centre.
The work will include road surfacing to deliver a smoother and safer highway.
Relocating the pedestrian crossing further away from the intersection of the Newell Hwy and Pinnuck St will also be included in the works.
Square dinkum
G’day.
The sign in the coffee shop announced: “We have no wi-fi — pretend it was 1973.’’
‘‘So, I paid 10 cents for the coffee and lit up a cigarette.’’
Hooroo!
