Landmark on a coin
Koonoomoo’s Big Strawberry has hit the big time in roadside attractions, with recognition by newly minted gold coins and stamps.
It has been included with these honours along with nine other ‘big things’ on the Royal Australian Mint’s latest coin collection celebrating roadside landmarks.
The collections are available for purchase from Australia Post outlets.
Pie winners
It may not appeal to some taste buds but a recipe of rabbit, walnut and figs added to pastry won over the judges at the recent Official Great Aussie Pie competition.
Cobram’s Diman Gow and Lina Galati of Hungie Fangs came up with the concoction titled Rustic Rabbit and claimed a gold medal in the gourmet game pie section of the competition.
Mr Gow said he was inspired to make the pie after growing up eating his grandfather’s rabbit stews, a popular meal in the hard times of the Great Depression.
Landfill contract
A $2,958,703.78 contract has been approved by Moira Council for a Hawthorn East company to develop the Cobram landfill.
Goldsmith Civil and Environmental Works has landed the lucrative contract, which was eagerly sought after.
Water release
Fully treated recycled water will soon be released in Sunday Creek.
Goulburn Valley Water will release the water from its Broadford waste water management facility over the coming weeks.
The release will not alter the strict water quality monitoring processes in place to protect the health of local communities and the environment.
Square dinkum
G’day.
My wife told me I can be an idiot sometimes ... I thought it was rather nice of her to give me permission.
Hooroo!
A bolting horse connected to a trailer loaded with full milk bottles is a scary thought but 63 years ago this scenario played out in Kyabram. Elieen Sullivan of the Kyabram Historical Society produced this story, printed in the Free Press at the time, of the incident.
