Slow down
Tatura’s main st — Hogan St — may have had the fastest vehicle ever to travel along it last week.
In a serious incident, police clocked a vehicle allegedly travelling at 150km/h in the early hours of Tuesday of last week.
The police air wing tracked the vehicle to Mooroopna and back after it had sped off after police being intercepted it in Mooroopna about 12.30am.
It was tracked back to a home in Mooroopna where arrests were made.
Take a train ride
Not many trains make it to Deniliquin these days, but there will be an exception in July.
The steam train known as The Riverlander departs Melbourne on July 19 and will take in Moama Lights spectacular before extending the journey to Deni where passengers will stay overnight and hopefully give the local economy a nice boost.
Darren to lead REDHS
Rochester Elmore District Health Services has welcomed a new interim chief executive Darren Clark.
He is well known in the community and has been the Director of Clinical Services for RDHS for a number of years. He has also been the Nursing Director of Aged Care Services at Echuca Regional Health since 2008.
He was also active through the 2022 floods and keeping the community updated with the rebuilding progress of the town.
Challenging times
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Shane Sali has labelled his current councillors as facing ‘‘more challenges than any other council of the modern era’’ after council had released a draft budget with an 2.7 per cent increase.
Wood stock needed
State Member for Northern Victoria Rikki-Lee Tyrell is back on the bandwagon of reopening the collection of firewood from Barmah Forest.
She said she was shocked to see dead trees and branches covering parts of the forest floor during a recent drive through the forest.
“They are inhibiting the growth of saplings and regeneration of the forest,’’ she said.
‘‘Allowing local residents into the forest to collect the fallen firewood would only not only help generate forest growth but also clear potential fire risks.’’
Tourism service gone
Sad times for Echuca-Moama Tourism service, now on its last legs.
The decades old organisation has pencilled in June 30 as the day its doors close.
Tourism chair George Santos said all the options had been analysed but without ‘‘major support’’ the long-term future of the organisation was not sustainable.
The major support came from the Campaspe Shire and Murray River Council, which have withdrawn monetary backing.
Fine for truck driver
An Echuca truck driver has been ordered to pay $73,062, a fine of $10,000 and $2000 in costs after continuing to claim injury compensation payments while working for multiple companies.
Simon Stoot, 57, pleaded guilty in Echuca Magistrates’ Court to one charge of dishonesty obtaining financial advantage by deception.
