We are talking rainfall.
Since Friday up to Monday, Kyabram weather station reported 17.4mm of desperately needed rain.
But now, follow-up falls are required for crops to benefit.
And apart from the rain the thermometer has given a reminder that winter is officially here.
On Thursday of last week, the minimum temperature dipped to a chilly -2.8°C, the lowest reading so far for 2025 and the fourth sub-zero temperature recorded this year.
Price is right
Apart from the winners, one person who should have felt a lot pride at the men’s Victorian Par 3 Golf Championship hosted by Parkland Golf Club on a freezing couple of days last weekend was not playing.
It was the club’s popular curator, Paul Price.
The men’s winner of the championship, Steven Slappendel, of Sydney’s Horizons Golf Club and a former professional golfer, said in his acceptance speech that the Parkland greens were “as good as any he had ever played on”.
And congrats to Parkland Golf Club and tournament organisers, who deserved the praise for what they presented.
The live streaming of the event also proved extremely popular.
Karl takes flight
And while on golf, Cobram golfer Karl Hindson has done something Tiger Woods hasn’t — scored an albatross.
In this case it was hole-in-one at the Cobram Golf Club on the par 4, 239m 16th hole during a recent club event.
Current club superintendent Terry Vogel is the only other golfer to perform the feat on that hole, back in 1986.
Hindson said it was a ‘‘pretty surreal experience’’, as he hadn’t even scored an eagle or a hole-in-one in his golfing career.
It was a big day for Hindson, as he also won the day’s competition with three teammates, including his father, Keith.
And just for good measure to confirm his luck was really in that day, he also won the club’s major raffle!
Winning is a numbers game
Taking the same Keno numbers for 20 years has paid off for a Tocumwal grandfather.
The man, whose name has not been revealed, scored the Keno Classic Spot jackpot in draw 536 and collected a cool $70,590.40.
It’s the second Keno windfall in the southern Riverina area this year, with a Barooga man winning $51,000 at the Sporties Barooga club in April.
Circus snub drags on
How long has it been since a circus performed in Kyabram?
As someone said, ‘‘a long, long time’’.
So Kyabram circus lovers would be a bit envious to learn Silvers Circus has just appeared for four nights in Seymour before moving on to stage performances at Wangaratta.
Women eye CWA revival
Usually when long-serving clubs and organisations pull the pin, few make a comeback.
Well, that may not be the case at Deniliquin, whose CWA went into recess in 2022.
Now a group of local women is staging a community meeting next Sunday (June 15) with a purpose to reactivate the group and reform a CWA branch in Deniliquin.
Flame still burns bright
Serving the community for a 150 years is a noteworthy feat — and that’s the milestone the Rochester Fire Brigade has just celebrated.
A torchlight procession, community barbecue and fireworks marked the sesquicentennial celebrations.
When the brigade was formed all those years ago, there were no water points within the town, so volunteers used wet hessian bags, branches, blankets and buckets of water to try to put out fires.
Upgrades will be ace
Seymour Tennis Club is undergoing upgrades as part of a $1.716 million project to improve local sporting facilities and encourage greater community participation in events.
The upgrade also includes the demolition of disused courts, with the area to be returned to open green space.
Square dinkum
G’day.
My wife and I are sitting on the couch watching TV when I hear a text. Realising I left my phone in the kitchen, I get up and go to the kitchen to check my phone.
It is a text from my wife saying: ‘‘Can you please bring some chips on your way back.’’
Hooroo!
