Legendary Kyabram footballers Garry Lyon and Brett Deledio have been in the news in the past week.

Lyon became the first Kyabram player to be inducted into the AFL’s Hall of Fame while Deledio was a big hit at the small town of Coleambally near Griffith when he pulled on the footy boots again — possibly for the last time — as part of the AFL Carlton Draft promotion.
Of all the 29 Kyabram footballers to make it to the AFL/VFL, Deledio has chalked up the most games with a total of 275 — with both Richmond and Greater Western Sydney — before injury ended his career in 2020.

Deledio was able to help Coleambally to a win against the TRYC Magpies in their Farrer Football Netball League clash last Saturday.
Lyon made a moving acceptance speech and had a few digs at his father, Peter, who was with family at the AFL function and enjoyed a good old belly laugh during what was an extremely emotional moment for him.
Prayers answered
The prayers of district farmers (and many others) were answered late last week and into the weekend when general rain again fell across the district.
It was an ideal follow-up to the previous week’s rain of up to 20mm, the first substantial fall for months.
In the latest falls, Kyabram received 11.2mm from Wednesday of last week to Monday of this week, which was around the average for the district.
One cropping farmer described it as “ideal’’, but a successful season now depends on more follow-up falls.
The latest rain has taken the June total to 28mm.
Searching for gold
Fosterville Gold Mine has been granted exploration licences for test digs at Rochester, Lockington and Elmore.
An exploration licence gives companies the exclusive rights to explore for specific minerals within the specified licence area.
Fosterville Gold Mine has been hosting introductory community engagement sessions in the three towns for residents to learn more about the company.
Fosterville Gold Mine community superintendent Trudi Jackson said an exploration licence did not mean mining would occur.
Man fined for cruelty
A 64-year-old man from Yielima near Picola has copped a $80,000 fine after being found guilty of cruelty.
He appeared in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on charges of killing 71 eastern grey kangaroos on his property in 2021.
In addition to the $80,000 fine he was also ordered to pay $404.91 in costs.
Ulupna Island firebug sentenced
A Bendigo man who lit more than 30 fires in Ulupna Island near Strathmerton in March last year was sentenced to 236 days in jail, which he has already served.
In Shepparton County Court last week, Brendan Helmore, 45, pleaded guilty to lighting the fires in what he said was an attempt to attract the attention of a plane flying above because he ‘‘was dehydrated and about to die’’.
When arrested he had two bags of substance believed to be methamphetamines.
Be wary this tax time
CPA Australia, the country’s largest accountancy body, is warning the public to be wary of scams ahead of tax time, particularly in the mornings.
Tax scam emails, text messages and other communications are expected to flood phones and inboxes before June 30.
Square dinkum
G’day.
My wife just opened the car door for me ... It would have been a lovely gesture had we not been doing 70mph.
