Peter nabbed first prize in a recent club major fundraiser competition, giving him 6000 reasons to be content with his day’s work.
Now, with co-coach Mark Patten, Peter is focusing on making a bid to win the GVL thirds competition, with their team sitting in second place on the ladder and certain to play finals.
Can you guess whose shout it is if they happen to go all the way?
Another dry patch
We have been back in a dry spell after the timely rains in July.
So far only 4mm has been recorded at the Kyabram Weather Station for August, and that was on Tuesday, August 4.
Lake views
Kyabram’s River Country Adventours operator, Rob Asplin, has just completed his 11th trip to Lake Eyre and reports floodwaters are still making their way into the iconic waterway in the middle of Australia.
And with 11 more trips locked in, he is confident he might see the lake peak at the same height as our oceans.
New life for mansion
Destination Goulburn Valley has taken over finding a new owner for the Dhurringile Mansion.
It’s a reaction to Greater Shepparton City Council’s recent decision not to purchase the currently vacant mansion and surrounds.
All sorts of ideas of what the future of the mansion could be have surfaced but DGV has taken on the advocacy of the project with a vision to revitalise the historic site for community and economic benefits.
The 68-room, 148-year-old double-storey mansion, which sits on 286 hectares of Crown land, has been home over the years to a pastoral property, an internment camp, a boys’ home and a minimum security prison up to this time last year when it was closed by the Victorian Government.
Winning margin a good guess
Kyabram’s footballers lost by an agonising one point to Manfield on Saturday — their first defeat for the season — but one Bombers fan was a winner.
A competition run by the Mansfield club to predict the winning margin in the game regardless of what team won, was won by veteran Kyabram supporter Geoff Beamish.
Geoff was a bit disappointed the one-point margin was in Mansfield’s favour rather than Kyabram’s, but was still happy to accept the $150 cash prize for his accuracy.
Power project to go ahead
The first of the renewable energy projects for the southern Riverina has been given the green light to proceed by the Independent Planning Commission.
Named Pottinger Energy Park, it is expected to create up to 900 construction jobs and at least 55 ongoing operational roles.
It will be situated on the Cobb Hwy at Booroorban, 75km north of Deniliquin and 65km south of Hay, and will be built across the Hay Shire and Edward River council boundaries.
A number of conditions have to be adhered to, including avoiding impacts on threatened ecological communities and species, including the endangered plains wanderer.
The initial stage of the development will include the construction of 140 wind turbines.
Fr Chris passes away
A priest known for his work in helping disadvantaged youth has passed away at the age of 70.
Born in Echuca, Father Chris Riley was founder of Youth Of The Streets, a non-profit organisation that supports children and young people in need.
The organisation began in 1991 with a single food van that served meals to young people experiencing homelessness in inner city Sydney.
Now it has over 220 staff members dedicated to helping people aged 12 to 14 in NSW and Queensland, offering support services and education appointments.
Fr Riley died at home on July 31.
Square dinkum
G’day.
Most people have heard of Karl Marx, but very few people have heard of his sister, Onya. She was a champion Olympic runner ... and her name is still mentioned at the start of every race.
Hooroo!
