Salvage story told
The salvage story of one of Echuca’s most popular paddle steamers, PS Alexander Arbuthnot, was told at the Echuca library on Friday, August 22.
The salvage has been documented in a book by Helene Sutherland whose late husband, John, and crew brought the paddle steamer back from a watery grave of 27 years from the Newman homestead on the Murray River at Yielima.
Built in 1916 at a sawmill at Koondrook, it sank at that venue in 1947 and was not retrieved until 1974.
Mrs Sutherland was there for every bit of the salvage operation and got the inspiration to write the book The Salvage of the Alexander Arbuthnot at the paddlesteamer’s 100th birthday in 2016 after an ABC radio broadcast of the milestone.
