A generous donation of $100,000 from Moama Bowling Club got stage one of the Echuca Moama Safe Towns Camera Project across the line, adding to its previous $30,000 contribution.
With the total funds raised previously sitting at $50,000, the new contribution gives the green light to the installation of CCTV cameras throughout Echuca’s High St, CBD and tourism precincts.
Moama Bowling Club chief executive Paul Barnes said the club was pleased to play a key role in bringing this long-planned project to life.
“This initiative has been years in the making, and its benefits to the safety and wellbeing of locals, visitors and businesses are clear,” he said.
“As a major community stakeholder, we believe it’s important to support measures that strengthen the security, confidence and liveability of the Echuca-Moama region.”
The community-driven initiative is designed to improve public safety, reduce anti-social behaviour and assist police with investigations.
Stage one of the project is expected to reduce property damage, enhance security for visitors, late-night traders and staff, and increase local businesses’ confidence.
Committee for Echuca Moama chair Tim Ford welcomed the club’s ongoing support.
“Moama Bowling Club has once again stepped forward as a leader in community partnership,” he said.
“Their contribution is deeply appreciated, and demonstrates what can be achieved when local organisations come together for the good of the community.”
The project has been led by C4EM, Victoria Police, Campaspe Shire Council, local retailers, hospitality venues and community representatives.
Members formed the Echuca Neighbourhood Safety Committee to champion initiatives aimed at ensuring residents are, and feel, safe in their homes, around town and on the road.
Campaspe Police Service Area Acting Inspector Justin McAuley said the funding announcement was great news for the community.
“The incredible dedication and passion shown by the members of the Echuca Neighbourhood Safety Committee is finally paying off,” he said.
“These CCTV cameras will not only instil a sense of security amongst our residents and visitors but will also equip Victoria Police with the means to swiftly identify and apprehend wrongdoers.
“The investment into our community's safety is immeasurable, and we cannot wait for the installation to be complete.”
Stage two and three of the CCTV project will be in the committee’s sights next, which would see the entrances into Echuca monitored and further coverage throughout town, helping police to track incidents.
