She also received special recognition for her commitment during COVID-19.
Hilda remembers how lovely it felt to be celebrated and share coffee and cake with fellow volunteers.
Hilda’s story began in Germany during World War II.
Life was tough — her mother passed away when she was very young, and she grew up in an orphanage run by nuns before moving to a boarding school at 12.
Despite hardship, she found joy in music.
Longing for a harmonica like her father once played, she was surprised when the nuns gifted her one, sparking a lifelong love of music.
As a teenager, Hilda migrated to Australia with her father and stepmother, beginning her new life at Bonegilla.
With little English, she worked as a carer and cleaner, and quickly learned English through her young son’s schooling.
After losing her first husband, she found happiness again with Wal, a kind Cobram farmer who bred border collies.
Together, they shared a love of dog shows, winning many trophies.
Wal’s passing from cancer was heartbreaking, but his love and care lived on in the home he left her.
Through volunteering, Hilda gave her heart to residents at Irvine and Ottrey House in Cobram.
She made lasting friendships — playing Ludo, knitting, sharing coffee and bringing joy with her harmonica.
She fondly remembers “Little May”, a tiny woman who sang through her fears, even during injections, with Hilda by her side.
Music and kindness followed Hilda everywhere.
She played in a small band, lifting spirits with Irish, German and Aussie tunes.
“You miss a person when they have been a lovely part of your life,” she said, reflecting on the profound bonds volunteering gave her.
In May 2025, the circle of kindness turned back to Hilda.
Jen, a new ACVVS volunteer, was matched with her, and the two now share a beautiful friendship.
Together, they chat, laugh and make handmade cards, keeping joy and creativity alive.
Hilda’s life, from a challenging childhood to decades of giving, shows the extraordinary power of kindness.
Her story is a reminder that when you give to others, love always finds its way back.
