NSW Police have launched Easter Operation 2024 – a highly visible police traffic operation with a focus on reducing road fatalities and road trauma this holiday weekend.
It began at 12.01am today and continues until 11.59pm Monday.
Double-demerit points are in force throughout the period for speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.
Officers will also be targeting other high-risk driver behaviour, including the Four Ds: drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving.
Murray River Police District Inspector Paul Huggett said the Aussie culture of “watching your mates” should be carried through the weekend.
“It seems to go out the window a bit after people have had a few drinks, but we just want people to be respectful, safe, have a good Easter and get home safe,” Insp Huggett said.
“Police will be out in force in making sure our communities and roads are safe, but you also have a responsibility.
“It in incumbent of all occupants of a vehicle to be responsible.
“If you don’t challenge poor driving behaviours, you’re putting your life at risk.”
Seven people lost their lives during the Easter long weekend in 2023 with a total of 14,564 traffic infringement notices issued for speeding, a further 326 people were charged for drink-driving offences, while 311 people were issued infringements for mobile phone usage.
